I. PAULS THORN IN THE FLESH
YOU HEAR PEOPLE SAY:
* GOD, MADE PAUL SICK, ( GAVE HIM A THORN ) TO HUMBLE HIM
* LIKE PAULS THORN, I HAVE TO BARE, THIS SICKNESS
* IF GOD DIDN’T HEAL PAUL, HE MIGHT NOT HEAL ME
LETS LOOK AT WHAT THE WORD OF GOD SAYS, ABOUT THIS
NOT WHAT WE’VE HEARD, OR WHAT WE THINK
2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (KJV)
7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.
8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
1. WHERE DID THE THORN, COME FROM
THE WORD MESSENGER, (GREEK) IS THE SAME WORD WE GET ANGEL FROM
THIS WAS A DEMONIC ANGEL OR MESSENGER, SENT BY SATAN, (NOT GOD) why, TO BUFFET PAUL
MEANS TO RAP WITH THE FIST,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,RAPEDATLEY
A CONSTANT ASSAULT
Mark 14:65 (KJV) JESUS
65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the servants did strike him with the palms of their hands.
Matthew 26:67 (KJV) JESUS
67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
1 Corinthians 4:11 (KJV) PAUL
11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace;
NOAH WEB. DICT.
BUFF’ET, noun A blow with the fist; a box on the ear or face; a slap.
BUFF’ET, verb transitive To strike with the hand or fist; to box; to beat.
IT IS A PHYSICAL, REPEATED BLOW TO THE FLESH
LIKE THE WAVES OF THE OCEAN
MANY PEOPLE THINK THIS THORN, CAME FROM GOD, BECAUSE
VS. 7 SAYS, IT CAME BECAUSE OF THE ABUNDANCE OF REVELATIONS
SO, THEY ASSUME, THAT THE THORN, WAS FROM GOD, TO KEEP PAUL HUMBLE
THINK ABOUT IT
WHY WOULD GOD CONTINUE TO GIVE THESE REVELATIONS TO PAUL
IF THEY WERE MAKING HIM PRIDEFUL
REVELATION KNOWLEDGE, (LIKE PAUL WAS GETTING)
* DOESN’T COME WITH YOU HAVING PRIDE
* DOESN’T PRODUCE PRIDE
( CARNAL KNOWLEDGE DOES)
NOTICE, TWICE IN THIS VERSE, LEST I SHOULD BE EXALTED ABOVE MEASURE
YES, THIS WORD CAN BE USED IN 2 WAYS
1. SELF EXALTED 2. EXALTED BY OTHERS
IF IT WAS SATAN WHO SENT THE THORN, THEN
IT WAS SATAN, THAT DIDN’T WANT HIM EXALTED
SO WE KNOW IT WASN’T PRIDE, FOR SATAN WOULD LOVE THAT
AND, it wasn’t god humbling him
HUMBLE / 25 TIMES IN SCRIPTURE = 3 / GOD & 22 / MAN
THE SCRIPTURE SAYS TO HUMBLE YOURSELFS
2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Matthew 18:4 (KJV)
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
James 4:10 (KJV)
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
1 Peter 5:6 (KJV)
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
PAUL, WAS BEING EXALTED, ALSO, BECAUSE OF THE WORK HE WAS DOING FOR GOD
HEALING THE SICK, RAISING THE DEAD, SIGNS & WONDERS
Acts 16:20 (KJV)
20 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city,
Acts 19:26-27 (KJV) SHUTTING DOWN THEIR IDOL MAKING BUSINESS
26 Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands:
27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
PAUL WAS LEADING ALL THE PEOPLE TO CHRIST ,
SO SATAN HAD TO DO SOMETHING TO TRY AND STOP HIM
SO, SATAN GAVE PAUL ,THIS, THORN IN THE FLESH,
NOW THAT WE KNOW WHERE IT CAME FROM,
2. WHAT WAS THE THORN
SOME PEOPLE THINK, THAT THIS THORN WAS SICKNESS
BECAUSE OF THE WORD INFIRMITIES IS USED, SO MANY TIMES
BUT NOTICE, VS.9 THAT IT IS PLURAL, SO IF YOU BELIEVE IT WAS SICKNESS, THEN HE HAD MORE THAN ONE SICKNESS
THIS WORD, INFIRMITY, IS USED TODAY UNIVERSALLY, TO REFER TO SOME TYPE OF SICKNESS
WE EVEN CALL A MILITARY HOSPITAL, AN INFIRMARY
BUT, BACK WHEN THE KING JAMES BIBLE WAS TRANSLATED
IT WAS NOT LIMITED TO JUST SICKNESS
SEARCH / ALSO MEANS = WEAKNESS, FEEBLENESS, MORAL FRAILTY
IMPOTENT, OR STRENGTHLESS
Romans 8:26 (KJV) SAME WORD USED FOR NOT KNOWING WHAT TO PRAY
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
SO, WHAT WAS PAULS THORN IN THE FLESH ?
PERSECUTIONS & tribulations & afflictions NOT SICKNESS
PAUL, HIMSELF,,,, TELLS US WHAT HIS THORN WAS IN
2 Corinthians 11:23-30 (KJV) PAUL WAS DEALING WITH FALSE APOSTLES
23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.
24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;
26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;
27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?
30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.
THIS MAKES IT VERY CLEAR, THAT HE WAS REFERRING TO HARDSHIPS & PERSECUTIONS
WE ARE REDEEMED FROM SICKNESS, BUT NOT PERSECUTIONS
2 Timothy 3:12 (KJV)
12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
THE PEOPLE THAT PAUL WAS TALKING TO, UNDERSTOOD HIS TERMINOLOGY…………………………………………..
WHEN HE USED THE PHRASE, THORN IN THE FLESH ( AND IT WASN’T SICKNESS )
3 TIMES;THORN IN THE FLESH, IS USED, LIKE PAULS
Numbers 33:55 (KJV)
55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in the land wherein ye dwell.
Joshua 23:13 (KJV)
13 Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
Judges 2:3 (KJV)
3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
PAUL WAS WALKING IN VICTORY, AND THE PEOPLE SAW THIS, AND WERE FOLLOWING PAUL
SO, SATAN SENT HIS MESSENGER, TO BUFFET HIM, SO THAT THE PEOPLE WOULD SEE THE PERSECUTIONS & HARDSHIPS AS WELL, AND STOP
EXAMPLE = PREACHER PRODUCING SIGNS & WONDERS, THEN PEOPLE WANT TO FOLLOW,,,,,,BUT LET SOME PERSECUTIONS COME,,,,,AND THEY WILL STOP
II. PAUL / ASIAN EYE DISEASE
SOME PEOPLE THINK, THAT PAULS THORN, WAS ASIAN EYE DISEASE
Galatians 4:13-16 (KJV)
13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.
15 Where is then the blessedness ye spake of? for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
16 Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?
TRUE, HE IS REFERRING TO SOME KIND OF PHYSICAL PROBLEM IN HIS FLESH,
AND IT APPEARS TO BE WITH HIS EYES
YOU WOULD HAVE PLUCKED OUT YOU OWN EYES, AND GAVE THEM TO ME.
NOTICE, HOW PAUL IS SPEAKING OF A PREVIOUS TIME, THAT HE HAD SPENT WITH THEM
VS.13 AT THE FIRST (WHEN I FIRST CAME TO YOU) SPOKE BEFORE
LET’S LOOK AT THIS TIME, PAUL IS TALKING ABOUT
ACTS 14 PAULS FIRST MISSIONARY TRIP TO GALATIA / LYCAONIA REGION
PAUL AND BARNABAS START OUT IN ICONIUM
* UNBELIEVING JEWS STIRRED UP, & DIVIDED THE CITY
* MADE A PLAN TO STONE THEM
* FLED TO LYSTRA
WHEN THEY GOT TO LYSTRA
* PAUL HEALS A CRIPPLED MAN ( FROM BIRTH )
* THE PEOPLE SAW THIS, & SAID THE GODS HAVE COME DOWN
TO US IN THE LIKENESS OF MEN
BARNABAS = JUPITER & PAUL = MERCURIUS
* WHEN THEY HEARD THIS, THEY RENT THEIR CLOTHS & STOPPED
THEM FROM SACRIFICING TO THEM
* VS.19 JEWS FROM ANTIOCH & ICONIUM CAME DOWN AND
PERSUADED THE PEOPLE TO STONE PAUL & LEFT HIM @ DEAD
* VS.20 THE DISCIPLES STOOD ROUND ABOUT HIM, HE ROSE UP
AND CAME INTO THE CITY (LYSTRA)WHERE HE JUST GOT STONED
NEXT DAY HE GOES TO DERBE & PREACHES
* VS.21 THEY RETURNED AGAIN TO LYSTRA, ICONIUM,& ANTIOCH
WHERE THEY FIRST STARTED THIS MISSION TRIP
THIS IS THE SAME PEOPLE, PAUL IS TALKING TO IN GAL. 4
WHEN HE SAID,
Galatians 4:13 (KJV)
13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first.
NOW YOU CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT PAUL WAS SAYING ( AT THE FIRST )
THINK ABOUT IT, PAUL IS STONED TO DEATH, THEN IN LESS THAN 24 HRS
HE IS BACK IN LYSTRA PREACHING, THEN ON TO DERBE, THEN TO ICONIUM & ANTIOCH
JUST BECAUSE GOD RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, OR IF HE WASN’T DEAD & JUST GOT UP
HE HAS GOT SOME MAJOR HEAD INJURYS, FROM THE STONING
BECAUSE, YOU KNOW THEY AIMED FOR HIS HEAD
WHATS THE FIRST THING YOU AIM FOR WHEN YOU
KILL A SNAKE (HIS HEAD)
WHICH MAKES SENSE, OF WHAT HE SAID, IN VS. 15 IF IT HAD BEEN POSSIBLE YE WOULD HAVE PLUCKED OUT YOUR OWN EYES & GAVE THEM TO ME
OK, EVEN IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME, AND THINK PAUL DID HAVE EYE PROBLEMS,,,,,,,,HE DID SAY AT THE FIRST, IMPLYING THAT IT WASN’T PERMANENT,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, SO HE MUST HAVE GOT OVER IT
TO MY KNOWLEDGE
THE ONLY OTHER VERSE , THAT IS USED; TO TRY TO CONFIRM THAT PAUL HAD A EYE PROBLEM IS
Galatians 6:11 (KJV)
11 Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you with mine own hand.
FIRST, THIS IS A MAJORLY DEBATED VERSE
MANY SCHOLARS & EVEN BIBLE TRANSLATIONS, STAND FIRM THAT PAUL WAS REFERRING TO THE SIZE OF EACH LETTER THAT HE WROTE
THE NLT 2 EVEN HAS THIS VERSE, EXTRA LARGE PRINT
It could also very easily be referring to the length of this letter as a whole instead of the individual letters that comprised each word.
1ST. LOOK AT ( HOW LARGE A LETTER ) WHAT WAS THE BOOK OF GALATIONS, IT WAS A LETTER TO THE GALATIONS
2ND. THE WORD LARGE (GREEK) MEANS
a quantitative form (the feminine) of the base of <G4225> (pou); how much (as indefinte), i.e. in size or (figurative) dignity :- how great (large).
I THINK PAUL, SIMPLY MADE A STATEMENT, REFERRING TO A LONG LETTER
LIKE ALL THE SCHOLARS, ITS ALL SPECULATIONS
I PERSONALLY DO NOT BELIEVE PAUL HAD ANY EYE PROBLEMS,
OTHER THAN BEING STONED TO DEATH, AND HIS EYES WERE SWOLLEN
Philippians 2:24-30 (KJV)
24 But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.
25 Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants.
26 For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick.
27 For indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.
28 I sent him therefore the more carefully, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:
30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
WHAT HAPPENED TO EPAPHRODITUS?
HE OVERWORKED HIMSELF FOR THE GOSPLE SAKE.
* DOING THE WORK OF CHRIST, IS GREAT & IS VERY IMPORTANT
* BUT WE GOT TO REMEMBER, WE STILL LIVE IN A MORTAL BODY
* GOT TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF, EAT RIGHT – GET PROPER REST
THERE ARE LIMITS
IF YOU DONT EAT RIGHT, AND GET THE PROPER REST, YOUR BODY IS GOING TO BE SUSEPTIBLE TO SICKNESS
YOU REMEMBER IN THE FIRST TEACHING, THAT ONE OF THE 3 WAYS YOU CAN GET SICK, WAS THROUGH NATURAL WAYS
1. SIN 2. ATTACK OF SATAN 3. NATURAL WAYS
IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOUR A PREACHER, PROPHET OR WHO EVER
if YOU VIOLATE NATURAL LAWS, you may get sick
THIS IS HOW EPAPHRODITUS GOT SICK
ANOTHER NATURAL ONE
THIS IS WHERE PAUL PREACHED UNTIL MIDNIGHT, AND EUTYCHUS WAS SITTING IN A WINDOW ON THE 3RD. STORY, AND WENT TO SLEEP, AND FELL OUT, AND DIED
THEN PAUL RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD
ITS NOT ALWAY SIN OR AN ATTACK OF SATAN, ( WE ALWAYS BLAME SATAN )
SOMETIMES THINGS JUST HAPPEN IN THE NATURAL,
SOMETIMES, IT COULD ALSO BE OUR FAULT
SWIMMING IN THE WINTER / DIVING IN SHALLOW WATER / DRIVING TIRED
1 Timothy 5:23 (KJV)
23 Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
TIMOTHY DEFINATELY HAD A SICKNESS OF SOME SORT WITH HIS STOMACH, THAT GAVE HIM PROBLEMS OFTEN
NOTICE PAUL, INSTEAD OF PRAYING
GIVES TIMOTHY INSTRUCTIONS
STOP DRINKING THE WATER, USE A LITTLE WINE
THE WATER WAS BAD, & TIMOTHY WAS CONTINUING TO DRINK IT
PAUL & TIMOTHY , HAD TO HAVE DISCUSSED THE MATTER
MAYBE PAUL, HAD PRAYED FOR HIM & HEALED HIM (WE DONT KNOW)
WHATEVER THE CASE, TIMOTHY WAS CONTINUING TO DRINK THAT WHICH WAS MAKING HIM SICK
MAYBE TIMOTHY WAS STANDING ON MK. 16:18 THINKING HE COULD DRINK ANY DEADLY THING AND IT WOULDNT HURT HIM
THAT WOULD BE TEMPTING GOD
GOD’S GIVEN US A BRAIN, SO USE IT
2 Timothy 4:20 (KJV)
20 Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.
AS I SEARCHED THIS OUT, ALOT OF SCHOLARS SIMPLE MADE SPECULATIONS,
BUT ONE SEEMS TO THINK THE WORD SICK HERE, REALLY COULD HAVE BEEN TRANSLATED, EXHAUSTED, OR SIMPLY WORN OUT
AGAIN, JUST SPECULATION
WE JUST DONT HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON THIS,
WE HAVE TO ASSUME PAUL HAD PRAYED FOR HIM,
BUT FOR WHAT EVER THE REASON, HE WASNT HEALED
SO, PAUL HAD TO LEAVE HIM
IF PAUL HAD TO LEAVE SOMEONE SICK, WE MAY HAVE TO LEAVE SOME ONE SICK
HEALING SCHOOL 08/26/18 ROBIN HUTSON
WHAT ABOUT JOB
Healing has been provided for us by Jesus. According to the bible, Jesus provided it over 2000 years ago
Isaiah prophesied about it, (Isaiah 53:5 ) While there were many witnesses of it, the gospels recorded it, (Mat 27:26, Mark 15:15, John 1:1) and Peter teaches us to remember it, (1 Peter 2:24).
There are spiritual laws that govern faith. You can find MANY written in the Word of God. A few of them are:
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17)
Faith works by love (Galations 5:6)
We are to speak our faith (Mark 11:23-24)
Faith without works is dead (James 2:20)
Another law of faith we see given in scripture is:
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
This means you must have hope for something before you will see faith manifest. In other words, if you need healing, you have to see yourself well, you have to see yourself healed. If a person is in a wheelchair, they have to see their self walking, driving, getting their own bath, cleaning the house, mowing the yard, building a fence…..whatever they would be doing if they are healed. If someone has been diagnosed with Chrones disease, they have to see their self eating like a healthy person and not getting sick. If someone has a kidney that isn’t working, they have see their self with a working kidney, a healthy kidney, they have to envision their self with plumbing that works!
FAITH IS THE SUBSTANCE OF THINGS HOPED FOR……so hope comes before faith…
If you need a job, or a better job, are you in hope? Do you let your mind envision you working? Do you picture yourself going to and coming from the job you need?
If you need healing, are you in hope? When you think about yourself in future tense, do you see yourself healed? Do you see yourself doing things as a healthy person or are you seeing yourself as forever in your current state? Have you come in agreement with a bad report from a doctor or do you see yourself healed? We need to be believe what God says about our status and be in hope!
…but we don’t want to stay in hope! We want to get the Word in our soul and mouth and see faith manifest!
What is it that is keeping you from hope? It could be a number of things. Evaluate what is keeping you from hope and use the Word of God to overcome your situation!
When it comes to healing, there is one particular person’s life in the bible that keeps a lot of people from hoping for healing because they think God is testing them with sickness and they want to pass the test. Some people think God is using sickness to make them pure and squeeze out evil in their heart.
(There is so much wrong with that way of thinking). The person I am speaking of is Job.
People will say “What about Job?”
I want to share some things about the book of Job that will help you to not waver and be able to give an answer when someone brings up Job to bring doubt about God’s will to heal you or them.
(Give summary of Job)
First let’s go over a few facts about the book of Job.
Job has 42 chapters.
13 chapters can be used to understand the book of Job:
Chapters: 1,2, 42 written by the author (possibly Elihu)
Chapters: 32-37 Elihu spoke
Chapters: 38-41 God himself spoke. God did not give answer to why.
29 chapters that should not be used to interpret the book:
Job spoke in 20 chapters
There are 9 chpaters Job’s friends spoke:
Chapters: 4,5,15,22 Eliphaz
Chapters: 8,18,25 Bildad spoke
Chapters: 11,20 Zophar spoke
There are 29 chapters you cannot use to interpret the book of Job because they consist of Job and his 3 friends talking. God said the 3 friends did not speak what was true about God and said Job questioned God’s wisdom with ignorant words. See the commentary note below:
The significance of understanding Elihu as the author of this book is that this makes the things he spoke truths we can quote and depend on. Not everything spoken in this book is a dependable truth. Job and his three friends spoke many things that the Lord made very clear were wrong (Job 38:2 with 42:7).
Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary.
Let’s look at the scriptures that show us we can’t trust as truth everything that Job and his 3 friends said:
Job 38:1-2 (NLT2)
1 Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: 2 “Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorant words?
Job 42:1-6 (NLT2)
1 Then Job replied to the LORD: 2 “I know that you can do anything, and no one can stop you. 3 You asked, ‘Who is this that questions my wisdom with such ignorance?’ It is I—and I was talking about things I knew nothing about, things far too wonderful for me. 4 You said, ‘Listen and I will speak! I have some questions for you, and you must answer them.’ 5 I had only heard about you before, but now I have seen you with my own eyes. 6 I take back everything I said, and I sit in dust and ashes to show my repentance
In the very next verse God rebukes Job’s 3 friends:
Job 42:7 (KJV)
7 And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
We have to dig up improper teaching to receive good seed of the book of Job.
The book of Job does not teach:
#1: God does it to purify us, to mold us
(God uses his Word to teach/renew our minds, not sickness)
#2: It was a blessing in disguise
#3: God came up with the idea
Job 1:6-12 (KJV)
6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.
7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?
10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.
12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
Job 1:8 Considered = set thy heart upon
Many people interpret this as God initiating this whole conflict between Satan and Job. They think Satan wouldn’t have even noticed Job if God hadn’t pointed him out. I think it is just the opposite. The Lord knew what Satan was up to. He knew Satan was seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8) and knew that Job was in Satan’s cross hairs. All the Lord did was bring this out in the open. See my note at Job 1:10.
Young’s Literal Translation of this verse bears this interpretation out by saying, “Hast thou set thy heart against My servant Job?” Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary.
1 Peter 5:8 (KJV)
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Revelation 12:10 (KJV)
10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Luke 22:31 (KJV)
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
Satin had already set his heart on Job. God just brought it out into the open. God did not initiate it. Satan had already been going about seeking someone to devour and had Job in his sights!
God is not the initiator of problems in our life.
Satan did this for the entire purpose of getting Job to deny God. Satan wanted to destroy his testimony and his influence to serve God. It was persecution.
LET’S LOOK AT SOME DIFFERENCES BETWEEN JOB AND A BORN AGAIN BELIEVER.
1. Job had no covenant with God
It is believed that Job lived before the time of Abraham. Abraham had a covenant with God that included protection from his enemies. (Gen. 15:1)
Israel also had protection from their enemies under the law. (Deut. 28:7)
Satan was and is the enemy. Job had no protection from his enemies.
As a born again believer, not only do we have a covenant, but we have a better one!
6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. Hebrews 8:6 (KJV)
2. Job didn’t know about Satan and he had a limited knowledge of God.
Job didn’t have the scriptures to tell him Satan was:
the god of this world,(2 Cor. 4:4)
the prince of the power of the air, (Eph. 2:2)
the thief, (John 10:10)
the world was under his rule (1 John 5:19, Luke 4:5-6)
Because Job had a limited knowledge, he thought all his tragedies were from God. Job accuses God of afflicting him.
Job 6:4 (KJV) 4 For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.
Job 13:15 (KJV)
15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
As a new covenant believer, we know that God is not our enemy.
Ephesians 6:10-17 (KJV)
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Job said he wanted to plead his case to God:
Job 23:1-7 (KJV)
1 Then Job answered and said,
2 Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.
3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.
5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.
Job wants to speak directly with God so he can plead his case and argue that God has been unjust to him. He got his wish. God did appear to him in a whirlwind and spoke directly to Job (Job 38:1 and 40:6). But Job didn’t enter into an argument with the Lord; he was overwhelmed with the awesomeness of God. He saw himself as vile in comparison and put his hand over his mouth (Job 40:3-5). He was speechless.
Andrew Wommack’s Living Commentary.
Job 40:3-5 (KJV)
3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
4 Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.
Job also said in Job 1:21 The Lord gives and the Lord takes away. But God did not say that!
John 10:10-11 (KJV)
10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
3. Job had no weapons to fight Satan.
Job had no covenant, no weapons, no defense.
We have a covenant! Our covenant includes healing and protection!
(Phil 2:9,John 14:13,1 Peter 1:18-19,Acts 2:38,Eph 6:11,1 Cor.12,Mark 11:23,2Tim1:7,Eph 1:3,Mat 16:19)
4. Job was not born again.
When we are born again, we are a new creation born of the Spirit of God. Job had a sin nature. Under the new covenant we have direct access to God. God lives on the inside of us. Job was spiritually separated from God as he lived before the new covenant.
5. Job didn’t have an intercessor.
Job didn’t have an intercessor. Satan could accuse man day and night. Jesus has defeated the devil and sat down at the right hand of God. Jesus is our intercessor! The accuser of the brethren has been cast down and Jesus is now interceding for us! Job did not have Jesus as his intercessor. 1 Cor. 15:51-57, Rev.12:10,Heb. 7:25. Satan had full access to Job.
Job 9:33 (KJV)
33 Neither is there any daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand upon us both.
The word “daysman” was translated from the Hebrew word “YAKACH,” which means “to be right (i.e. correct); reciprocal, to argue; causatively, to decide, justify or convict” (Strong’s Concordance). It’s referring to an arbitrator or an umpire. Job is saying there is no one to plead his case with the Lord. He is unable to do it, and there is no one qualified to approach God or compassionate toward him to step in between them. This prayer was answered in Jesus. Jesus is the Mediator between us and God (1 Timothy 2:5). As God, He can speak as an equal with the Father (Philippians 2:6). And as man, He knows all our infirmities (Hebrews 4:15) so He can compassionately plead our case.
Luke 22:31-32 (KJV)
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
